Synopsis
Between the 17th and 19th century, a “Grand Tour” of Italy (as well as Greece and France) was considered an essential experience in a young man’s education for British and Northern European aristocrats.
Employing a rich and visually stunning archive of art, illustrations, interviews and elegant photography, this documentary brings to life the origins of this form of ‘tourism’.
Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence and Naples, glimpses of the countryside, the Alps, Vesuvius with Pompeii, vestiges of Magna Graecia and the Empire, to the rural scenes and festivals of popular tradition, represented a must-visit for lovers of painting, sculpture, architecture and landscape design.
