Synopsis
Set in 1864, KA WHAWHAI TONU tells the story of a pivotal battle in the country’s first land wars, a battle fought with impossible odds between Māori and the colonial forces.
This heroic conflict is told through the eyes of two young teenagers forced to take control of their own destiny amidst the chaos of the battle and their escape.
Fifteen year old Haki is a traumatised boy soldier who is on the run in a desperate attempt to reach his grandmother. He is captured by a group of warriors who are preparing a last and desperate confrontation against the British colonial forces.
Held as a sacrifice, Haki’s days are about to end until he is befriended and eventually saved by Kopu – a teenage girl and a reluctant medium for the war gods. Their lives will be shaped by the dramatic events about to unfold.
